Redefined Movement is this weekend!

The Sarasota Ballet presents Sir Frederick Ashton's Les Rendezvous, the Company Premiere of Paul Taylor's Brandenburgs, and Dominic Walsh's I Napoletani

January 31 - February 3, 2020

The Sarasota Ballet launches the 2020 Winter - Spring Season with the January 31st opening of Redefined Movement, at the FSU Center for the Performing Arts. The triple bill includes Sir Frederick Ashton’s Les Rendezvous; originally choreographed in 1933 in the nascent era of British ballet, Les Rendezvous is regarded as an early example of the intricate and nuanced choreography present throughout the work of Ashton’s career. With spectacle and flair rivaling its contemporary Russian ballets, Les Rendezvous is a dazzling entry in Ashton’s oeuvre. The program continues with the Company Premiere of Paul Taylor’s Brandenburgs; originally choreographed in 1988 to Johann Sebastian Bach’s famed “Brandenburg Concertos”, the performance serves as an exemplary display of Paul Taylor’s signature approach to modern choreography. With Paul Taylor’s passing on 29 August 2018, the last titan of American modern dance has gone; the company premiere of Brandenburgs, as well as the subsequent presentation of the Paul Taylor Dance Company, stands as a tribute to Taylor’s impact on the world of modern dance. Finally, this program closes with Dominic Walsh's I Napoletani; first created for Dominic Walsh Dance Theater in 2007, I Napoletani is a lighthearted ballet set to Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater and Neapolitan popular music from the late 1800s. Describing the ballet, Sarasota Herald-Tribune reviewer Carrie Seidman stated, “This charming portrait of the people of Naples captures the histrionic demonstrativeness of a culture firmly based in food, bravado and displays of the heart.”

Marcelo Gomes will join The Sarasota Ballet as a Guest Artist for this Program.
