In the final season of The West Wing, a young minority Democrat named Matt Santos ran for president against a much-older Republican senator. The senator was so moderate that he was criticized by the right-wing of his own party for not being crazy...er..."conservative"...enough. In an attempt to placate these critics, he chose as his running mate a fundamentalist Christian governor.

About a month before the election, a dramatic event occurred that tipped the election toward the Democrat. He won. His campaign manager, Josh Lyman, became the White House Chief of Staff, and Santos named his opponent as Secretary of State.

This year, a young minority Democrat named Barack Obama ran for president against a much-older Republican senator. The senator was so moderate that he was criticized by the right-wing of his own party for not being crazy...er..."conservative"...enough. In an attempt to placate these critics, he chose Sarah Palin.

About a month before the election, the economy crashed, tipping the election toward Obama. He won. His White House Chief of Staff will be Rahm Emmanuel, on whom the character of Josh Lyman was based, and Obama has named Hillary Clinton, his opponent in the primaries, as Secretary of State.
