"This nation shall have a new birth of freedom"
The Spitfire Grill
"Spitfire Grill" runs the gamut of emotions - you'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll adore this superb cast and infectious music.
The cast features Jennifer Baker as Percy, Bobbie Burrell as Hannah, Kirk V. Hughes as Sheriff Joe, Ellie Pattison as Shelby, Laura Raines as Effie, and Bill Sarazen as Caleb.
I LOVE this show - but don't take MY word for it - read the fantastic reviews by Jay Handelman in the Sarasota Herald Tribune, and Kay Kipling on SarasotaMagazine.com.

FIRST FRIENDS GALA, "A COURT A-FARE"
Tuesday February 3, 2009 - 5:45 PM, The Meadows Country Club
A GRAND GALA GATHERING OF FRIENDS
The Artist Series FRIENDS is hosting its very first fundraising gala on Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009 at the Meadows Country Club. "A Court-A-Fare", as the event is dubbed, will be a night of musical fun and surprises. I'll be your Court Jester and Master of Ceremonies!
The gala will commence at 5:45. The courtly theme unfolds in a setting that will be transformed into a regal castle of knights and their fine ladies. Cocktails will be followed by an elegant four-course meal. Surprise guest artists will provide musical interludes throughout the evening.
The grand finale will include a spectacular musical dessert, designed to bring this royal evening to a courtly and rousing close. Fine music, creative food, and convivial people in elegant surroundings set the stage for an evening where FRIENDship can flourish.
Artist Series founder Lee Dougherty Ross, Gala Chair Patricia Anderson and FRIENDS President Janice Landauer look forward to seeing you!
Tickets for A Court-A-Fare can be obtained by calling 941-504-4729.
Talking with the lovely Susan Wilcox (Bradenton Herald) at the Circus Sarasota Gala last week ...
As she took this photo with Dolly Jacobs, Janet Hunter, Pedro Reis and me, she casually said:
"Cliff, you look like a photo negative!"
Thanks, Susan! :-)
Opera and Orchestra Musical Community Party
I thoroughly enjoyed roaming the Opera House yesterday afternoon with hundreds of other happy faces, alternating between the courtyard and the theatre as the Sarasota Opera, Sarasota Youth Opera and the Sarasota Orchestra performed beautiful music for all the visitors. The Opera's Victor deRenzi and Susan Danis and The Orchestra's Joe McKenna, as well as their respective teams, were on hand to answer the many questions, while their solists and orchestra (under the baton of Dirk Meyer) performed, among others, extracts from Lakme, Donizetti's Elixir of Love, Glinka's Russlan & Ludmilla, Mozart's Magic Flute, Faust, as well as pieces from Funny Girl and Carmen out of the Orchestra's "Glamour Girls" series.
The Sarasota Opera Box Office is located in the Pavilion Building of the Sarasota Opera House complex at 61 N. Pineapple Avenue, Sarasota. Monday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Online ticketing is available 24 hours a day.

It's all in the timing. When I get up early in the morning, I can watch our gorgeous Florida sun slowly rise on the bird-bath outside my window. The flowers and trees in the garden that play home to the squirrels and other wildlife don't know what an "economic depression" means, and the only crisis my dog Sam feels is if I don't take him down to the Bayfront to visit his friends, splash around in the cooling waters and then sniff the bushes - or, as I call it, "read the newspaper".
A morning routine puts it all in perspective. No matter how many politicians have ranted and raved the night before, or how many points the Dow has fallen; whether a gallon of gas cost 5 cents more yesterday than the day before, or you didn't win the 13-million dollar lottery rollover last Saturday - take time out to tell your son you're proud of him and your daughter that she looks pretty.
Hug your spouse as you go off to work, sing along to Barry Manilow's "Daybreak", Elton's "Philadelphia Freedom" or Bon Jovi's "Living On A Prayer" in your car, and meet every frown at your workplace with a beaming smile - because at the end of the day, we've been given a brief time to live in our Sarasota Paradise and life's far too short to waste it feeling angry or sad.
You'll have to excuse me now - Sam urgently needs to read the Sports section.
Here are my dates of where I'll be appearing / emceeing / auctioning / acting etc. during the season - I hope to see you out and about!
