For years now, the conservative attacks on government arts funding (and, to be fair, it should be noted that many conservatives donate a great deal of money to the arts as private citizens) have been based on the claim that, "We don't want government bureaucrats dictating our arts content!"

Anyone who's actually been involved with the process at either the municipal, state, or federal level realizes that this is poppycock; grants are always awarded through a process of peer-review. Such government guidelines as there may be are exist to ensure that there are no financial irregularities or racial/gender discrimination.

This is why it was so surprising several years ago when the Bush administration actually proposed an increase in NEA funding, the catch being that the added funding could only be used to fund classical arts such as symphony, opera, and ballet.

Yup, that's right; the Republican administration was proposing that government bureaucrats dictate our arts content.

Wow - increased funding for the NEA, and health care for Artists! Whoa - there's a reversal. Hope it's not just another "dream deferred." I want to believe, I want to believe.

Yeah, Jeffrey - I can hear McC. now to his advisors "Er, the arts, yeah, tell me again, what are they?"
According to Elizabeth Currid at the University of Southern California, McCain, on the other hand, has a historical track record of supporting anti-arts legislation, including the 1999 Smith-Ashcroft Amendment, which would have cut all funding for the NEA; and the 1989 Helms Amendment, which aimed to deny funding to art considered “obscene.” McCain doesn’t have an arts policy, other than a desire to eliminate spending directed toward the arts.

To be perfectly fair, Rick, you should also post McCain's position on the arts.

Oh, wait....he hasn't taken one, has he?
